<itunes:summary>Should there be a law? A look at what's behind outlawing victimless acts

Hello again to all listeners. I’m Ben and welcome to the 8th edition of The Silent Consensus. We have moved websites, the new URL is thesilentconsensus.blogspot.com. Today we conclude the series of choices into the topic of victimless "crimes." Victimless "crimes" are acts that are illegal, but are not infringing on anyone else’s rights. Examples include certain drugs, prostitution, and gambling

Many people, myself included, might think some of these acts are immoral. This brings me to my next point, which is that legal and moral are not, and should not be, synonyms. And why not? What’s the big difference?

The difference is that all government power comes from the barrel of a gun. I don’t necessarily mean that literally, although it can be sometimes. Overall I mean government power comes from threatening bodily harm. Why? Government police and/or agents carry out laws. They put violators in jail, fine them, or subject them to community service. Those who resist arrest or refuse to comply receive bodily harm. So all political power comes from threatening bodily harm. If you were to resist even more, you’d likely get shot. So therefore, you might disagree with a certain action on moral grounds, but to say it should be illegal is to say that people doing those actions are doing something so wrong that it warrants having a gun pointed at their head in order to make them quit it. Just because you are so good at running your own life, it doesn’t mean you are entitled to run everyone else’s by holding them at gunpoint. Just because you think certain people will go to hell doesn’t mean you have a right to give them hell...</itunes:summary>
